What is 1in8B Play?

1in8B Play is a free, interactive life simulator in your browser. Begin with a random birth in one of 172 countries, read life events and make decisions as the character grows. Pause, choose a focus or continue a saved life; no account or download is required.

This is the 1in8B official English website (1in8b.live) for the Play edition.

On the one in 8 billion website, keep Auto off to answer for yourself. Pause when an event needs a closer read, and choose a focus that fits this stage of life.

In 1in8B Play, the one in 8 billion game unfolds through events and decisions. Read what happened, choose a response and watch the character’s circumstances change. You can pause to think, adjust the pace or let Auto answer when you want to observe.

What does “1 in 8 billion” mean?

The name 1in8b Play reads as “one in 8 billion”, or “one in eight billion” written out, evoking one imagined life among billions. You play that life through choices and events. The name is a theme, not an exact probability of being born as a particular person or reaching a certain ending.

Use the controls to reach the next choice

Choose 1×, 2×, 4× or 8× speed. Next event fast-forwards until an event, then returns to normal playback; use Pause when you want to stop and read. A manual decision waits for your answer. Auto picks a random available answer, including an unanswered decision when you enable it. Auto does not undo a pause you set yourself.

Keep a life, then decide whether to start again

Star events you want to keep, open the character profile and choose Save & return to the start to leave the life. Continue this life reloads saved progress in a paused state. Starting another life asks you to confirm replacing the current unfinished life; completed-life counts and achievements stay in the Book of Lives. Progress in an unfinished life is saved only in this browser for this domain.

Start a life, then read before you choose

A new life begins at age 0 in one of 172 countries. The draw uses annual births by default, with population weights available before starting; you cannot select a country. Read the birth certificate, then follow the event timeline. Manual decisions wait for your answer. You can set a decision aside to read the life so far without answering it or advancing time.

Balance Health, Joy, Mind and Bonds

Choose a focus from the options available at the character’s stage of life. Studying can build Mind while costing Joy; work can affect income and Health. Check the effect hints and follow all four states alongside the story. Higher scores do not guarantee a particular ending. Country averages, events and game rules shape a fictional outcome, not a forecast of your own health, income or lifespan.

Save, continue and revisit a finished life

Star an event to keep it. In the profile, Save & return to the start leaves the active life available to continue; continuing loads it paused. After a life ends, the summary and Past lives let you revisit retained records. Older records may contain only a summary or part of the history. Starting over is a separate action that asks you to replace the active life.

Data sources and limits

The data notes cite UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank World Development Indicators (WDI). Complete reference years and original values are not documented for every indicator, so we cannot guarantee that all figures are current or match the databases’ present values. The links below explain the indicators and original statistics; they do not verify every game value.

Source databases

The existing baseline draws on UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank development indicators, among other public statistics. It combines different reference years; individual observation years and estimation flags were not retained. Consult the original series before using these figures for research or current decisions.

Questions before you begin

Does Auto choose the best answer?

No. Auto randomly picks an available answer. Turning it on can immediately resolve a waiting decision, but does not cancel a pause you set yourself. Turn it off when you want to choose each response.

Does Next event pause the game at every event?

No. Next event fast-forwards to an event, then returns to ordinary playback at your selected speed. Use Pause to stop and read. A manual decision waits for your response.

Can I continue in another browser or on another device?

Saves for unfinished lives are stored in this browser for 1in8b.live and do not sync to other browsers or devices. Clearing site data can remove them. If local storage is unavailable, records may last only for the current tab. You can separately choose to keep the record of a completed life in the cloud; this does not let you continue an unfinished life on another device.

What happens when I start another life?

You must confirm replacing the active life. Completed lives and achievements remain; recent completed records can be opened from Past lives. A replaced unfinished life may leave a summary, but that summary cannot be resumed.

Where can I play the 1 in 8 billion game without downloading an app?

Play directly on this official 1in8B Play page. The 1 in 8 billion website is free to use in your browser, with no app to download or account to create.
